We’ve been hearing a lot more about Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, who have worked as joint partners out of a Paris-based design studio since 1999. The design duo has been commissioned for many newsworthy projects and installations, including modular pavilions for the Tuileries Garden and the award-winning Serif TV for Samsung. But we’re not forgetting the equally notable results of collaborations with Swiss furniture brand Vitra, Finnish design brand iittala and Italian design house Alessi that first caught our eye.
The contributions to the growing Vitra collections are ones that showcase both ingenuity and versatility, making a home feel like a modern yet comfortable showcase. A prime example is “Algue“, which played with ways to use open space as an art installation, room dividers or window treatments. The eclectic system of storage shelves “Corniche” also challenged the way we view vertical space.
iittala welcomed the Bouroullec brothers into their impressive glass catalog with the “Ruutu” vases. Joining the famous fluid-formed Aalto vase, the more clean-lined diamond vase was well-received and may find itself as another classic vase for iittala.
Showcasing close attention to detail, the brothers also designed a staple flatware and dinnerware collections for Alessi called “Ovale.” The design answers a call for simplicity yet beauty in everyday life, striving to be equal parts original, rustic and traditional. Ovale tells a simple yet expressive story on the contemporary tablescape.
With such an impressive and growing portfolio, it’s no wonder why Wallpaper Magazine named this talented team Designer of the Year.
