The September 2011 Marimekko Desktop Calendar: Still taken by the moody and unexpected fabric patterns from Marimekko’s Fall Collection, I chose to feature the Trombi print from last week’s Fall Fabrics blog. The creamy, eggshell-colored background and expressive black brushstrokes create an exciting new autumn pattern. Designed by Maija and Kristina Isola in 1984, they used simplified colors and played with positive and negative space; both are key design concepts from the decade. Finnish for “tornado,” this moving pattern is available on cotton fabric or a smaller version called, Tuisku or “blizzard,” is available on throw pillows and a handbag. A whirring print full of structure and refinement, Trombi will add interest to any desktop background.
