As mentioned in a previous post by Megan, 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of Marimekko’s Unikko pattern. In 1964, designer Maija Isola defied Marimekko founder Armi Ratia’s decree of never printing floral patterns and created Unikko. This defiance made an impact on Marimekko’s design language and has become one of the most iconic patterns for the design powerhouse.
In celebration of the anniversary, the Unikko 50 Years celebratory collection was unveiled during Copenhagen Fashion Week this past fall. The collection, designed by Teemu Muurimäki, features unique flowing silk pieces that showcase the iconic pattern in an avant-garde manner. The dresses aren’t for sale, but they’re available exclusively for stylists to present to their clients as options during awards season.
This made me think about the Golden Globes, which just aired a few nights ago. Since Marimekko wasn’t spotted on the red carpet, I decided to play a wannabe stylist and paired celebrities straight from the Golden Globes’ red carpet with the special Unikko dresses designed by Teemu Muurimäki. Take a look below at who I chose to pair with what dress.
This Marimekko dress (right) is fun yet refined. The collar is embellished with poppy flower appliques, which add some texture and color to the neutral-colored dress. I think Taylor Swift would look absolutely adorable in this short little number.
Zoe Saldana is constantly on the best-dressed lists and doesn’t seem afraid to experiment with her looks. This long, flowy Marimekko frock features an unconventional color combination, but I think it would match up with Zoe perfectly. She has an amazing figure and it would drape nicely against her frame.
So, what do you think? Are there any other celebrities you think would look great in the Unikko dresses above?
