The Museum of Finnish Architecture, a national specialist museum, is among the oldest in the world to specialize in architecture. Established in 1956, it stands as a symbol of Finland’s rich architectural heritage and international impact. The first notable feature of this landmark is the building in which it is housed in. The Museum of Finnish Architecture inhabits a historic, neo-renaissance building that dates back to the late 19th century. The building was designed by architect Magnus Schjerfbeck and completed in 1899, originally in use by a scientific society and the University of Helsinki. In 1981, the Museum of Finnish Architecture officially took over the historic site and sits on the same city block as the famous Design Museum in Helsinki’s Design District.
Collections & Galleries
The Museum of Finnish Architecture’s permanent collections offer visitors a glimpse into the various architectural styles that have shaped Finland. The permanent collection, titled “The Decades of our Architecture,” takes guests on an architectural journey through Finland from 1900-1970. This features urban planning, residential structures and interiors during the changing social, political and technological landscapes of each decade. The museum organizes exhibitions on both Finnish and foreign architecture, housing large collections of over 500,000 drawings, 120,000 photographs, and architectural scale models. Works from renowned architects such as Elliel Saarinen and Alvar Aalto are prominently featured, highlighting their international impact on architecture. Additionally, temporary exhibitions explore current trends, innovative designs and continuously promote modern architecture in Finland.
The Museum of Finnish Architecture is also home to a specialist library open to the general public. Its collections number over 33,000 volumes, including all fields of architecture and urban planning. The museum’s shop also has a large selection of books that visitors can purchase on site. Along with its extensive architectural literature, education is a cornerstone of the museum’s mission. The museum hosts lectures, seminars, guided tours and workshops, fostering a deeper understanding of architecture among diverse audiences.
