Design Museum is an internationally acclaimed national specialist museum located in the heart of the Helsinki Design District. It’s devoted to the exhibition of both Finnish and foreign design, including everything from industrial design, graphic design and fashion. Design Museum proudly stands as a testament to Finland’s rich and innovative design legacy, bringing visitors on a historical journey through exhibitions that are specially selected and maintained by the museum. Whether you are drawn to historical classics or the latest innovations, Design Museum is a must-see destination.
Design Museum was originally founded in 1873 as a study collection for the arts and crafts school. The museum is now 150 years old as of 2023, marking it as one of the oldest in the world. The historic building it inhabits was originally built as a Swedish school designed by architect Gustaf Nyström in 1894, and Design Museum has operated on this current premise since 1978. Also known as “Designmuseo,” even the architecture of the building itself boasts a rich history with its 17th century neo-Gothic influence.
